In an attempt to make learning to read "easy" and fun, I tried a lot of different resources with Big Sis (9).  The vast majority (all?) were phonics-based because that's what I thought I was "supposed" to do.  We diligently learned our word families and digraph blends and all of that. In honor of Veterans Day, I'm thankful today for all the men and women who have served our country in the past, who serve currently, and who will in the future.  My gratitude, and prayers, are with them.

I've been a fan of Dandi Daley Mackall's children's books since Big Sis was a toddler, so I was glad to have a chance to review her newest rhyming book When God Created My Toes.  With a cute and catchy rhyming verse, Ms. Mackall looks at the world through the eyes of a little girl who explores questions like "Did God have to hold His nose when He created my toes?"

I generally look forward to fall as my favorite season -- the beginning of a school year with new and exciting things to learn, new crayons, blank notebooks to be filled, the anticipation of the holiday season approaching, the gorgeous colors of the changing leaves, the invigorating cooler air.  Yes, I love fall!
