Lil Sis (4) has been reading sight words since age 2. As part of her special needs issues, she can easily memorize sight words, but does not always connect them in meaningful ways, such as by definition or when used in a sentence. Because of that, I'm always on the look-out for resources to help enhance her reading and learning experience and extend her vocabulary in a fun way that suits her sometimes short attention span. Reading Eggs has been a good match for us!
Reading Eggs is an online program that introduces children to the world of reading through interactive stories and games with fun characters. With activities for ages 3-7, Reading Eggs helps to spark a love for reading with everything from alphabet recognition to phonics to early reader stories. Puzzles, games, and songs are used to capture a child's attention and make the reading experience multi-sensory. Reading Eggspress (another part of the Reading Eggs World) is geared for older children (7-13) to encourage fluent reading.
Developed by educational experts, Reading Eggs focuses on the core concepts of phonics and sight words. Children can progress at their own pace, enjoying an individualized reading experience. As reading "Eggsplorers," kids work through 100 lessons, including spelling and reading comprehension. Even more lessons are currently being developed for the older age range, as well.
Here is a look at what you can expect from the online world:
Reading Eggspress offers reporting so that parents can keep track of what the children are learning and how well they're doing. Lessons cover Year 2 to Year 6 reading curriculum in an engaging online world that children enjoy. Stories cover both fact and fiction for a broad range of reading material. A map aids in navigation throughout Reading Eggs World. After the completion of each map, there is a quiz. The results are sent to parents in an email. Children can earn online game rewards by completing lessons.

Big Sis (10) has taken some time to explore the Reading Eggspress section and to help out with Lil Sis in the Reading Eggs section, so we've given it a pretty thorough testing. Big Sis says some of the advantages are the colorful scenes and characters and the fun stories. I love to see them giggling together as they work on the lessons. Lil Sis is not intimidated at all by the lessons and really looks forward to using the program. She will actually ask Big Sis to "play the eggs game" with her. Even Baby Girl (2) recognizes the characters now and points to the screen making comments as she watches her big sisters.
Reading Eggs has been a success in our homeschool and I would like to continue it beyond our free three month trial. As long as Lil Sis is enthusiastic about it and it is helping her to expand her vocabulary, I want to encourage her!
There is a 14-day free trial available, so there is no risk with Reading Eggs. Subscriptions are available in the following options:
- 12 months for $75 (add a second or third child at 50% off)
- 6 months for $49.95 (add a second or third child at 50% off)
- Monthly for $9.95
