TOS Crew Review: MathRider

Photobucket

Adventure story + horses + math skills = MathRider

Big Sis (10) loves horses, exciting stories, and needs practice on her math facts, so MathRider, a math facts game, is an equation for success in our homeschool!

PhotobucketMathRider is a computer math game that puts your child into the saddle of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.  Children complete a quest (told in story form at the beginning of the game) by riding a horse through math problem obstacles.  They must complete the math problem to get past the obstacle.  The game is intelligent in that it adjusts to your child's level as they play, so facts are never too easy nor too difficult.  The faster the child can solve the problem, the faster the horse can gallop.

The creator of MathRider, Thomas Brand, developed the game to help his own children.  He is passionate about helping kids ages 6-12 master math facts (numbers 1-12) to build a basic foundation.  This math facts foundation can then be built upon as children increase confidence in their own skills.  I appreciate the fact that he has created a fun game that kids actually enjoy, but that provides the repetitive practice needed to gain mastery of the math facts.  It's definitely an improvement on the old standard of flash cards in our homeschool day.

PhotobucketSeveral times during our trial, Big Sis has asked if she could play MathRider.  I see her math facts memory improving as she plays.  She tries to increase her speed so the horse will be faster, so the incentive is built right into the program.  We really needed this because math facts is an area where we have struggled.  I have been looking for something just like this for her!  She loves being the story hero and getting to ride a horse, too.

MathRider is available as an instant download for $37 through Feb. 15th.  After that date, the price increases to $47.  It works on both PC and Mac operating systems.  There is a no risk 30-day money back guarantee offered as well.

I'm glad we had the opportunity to use MathRider and so is Big Sis!
