When I hear the words "always ice cream" I don't automatically think educational website.  Yet, in this case, that is exactly what Always Icecream is -- a fun and educational website designed just for girls in the 7-12 age range.

I was intrigued by the concept of a website that could combine the elements of learning with the fun and games of other popular websites that allow for some online social interaction.  Would it be safe?  Would it really be educational?  Here are some answers from the website:

Always Icecream has been certified by the Privo Privacy Assurance Program to be in compliance with the rigorous standards defined in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The following steps are examples of the measures we take to improve safety for your daughter:
  • Traceable membership. Security levels improve when people can’t hide behind anonymity, but can be tracked down if need be. We require that after a short trial period every user provide a credit card, which in turn verifies that an adult knows about them joining.
  • No ads. We don’t want to depend on ads to pay for site improvements since ads lead to external sites at which we cannot control the content.
As to the educational aspects, Always Icecream covers math, science, language arts, typing, geography, and more.  Each level gets progressively harder to challenge your daughter as she advances.  Girls earn $coops (virtual money) with which to purchase items for their mini-homes, as well as pets and games.

Your daughter can choose her own "mini-me" character and dress her in her own style.  The colors on the website are pastel and pretty.  Think lots of pink!  I thought the graphics were cute and definitely girly.  Here is an example from the Typing game:

One of the things that I liked best about Always Icecream is the weekly email report I received detailing Big Sis' progress and activity.  This is a rundown of the information that I received:

Your Daughter's Recent Learning Progress

During the last 90 days, Big Sis made progress in the following learning games:
  • Typing for Beginners from level 1 to 8
  • Math Quiz - Adding from level 1 to 5, earning a Bronze Medal
  • States of the USA from level 4 to 46, earning a Gold Medal
  • Bible Quiz from level 1 to 3, earning a Bronze Medal
  • Basic Anatomy from level 1 to 18, earning a Silver Medal
  • Synonyms from level 1 to 17, earning a Silver Medal
  • Math Quiz - Multiplying from level 1 to 4
  • Dog Breeds Quiz from level 1 to 5, earning a Silver Medal
  • Typing Intermediate from level 1 to 2

Moderated Communication

Your daughter did not communicate with any other girls. Please note that all communication is moderated before it can be viewed.

Educational Videos Watched

Your daughter did not watch any educational videos recently. Please note that the information in this report is updated daily.

No artwork has been created recently.

I also liked the fact that I could award $coops to Big Sis for chores or special occasions or just as a surprise.  There is a setting in the parent section that allows you to choose how many $coops to give for a certain activity.  I like it that Always Icecream provides Bible-based learning, too, like memory verses.

Big Sis (9) wrote a review in her own words.  She even typed it herself.
I was happy to review a website for girls called ALWAYS ICE CREAM.
Here is a list of things I liked…
1.I liked the ICE CREAM SHOPPE game (where you buy new flavors for your ice cream shoppe.)  Shoppe is the old way to spell shop.
2.I liked the NAME THE STATES game. Now I know all 50 states (and can remember all of them too, which is very hard!) and can show them on the map with no help.
3.I liked the TYPING game. It is fun and it was the first game I played.

There were some things that I did not like, but there are not many.
1.I liked how you could get pets but I would like it better if I had an option of which pet you could get instead of just getting an egg and hoping it is the one you want. I wanted a dog but I got a cat. I still like her but I wish she was a dog.
2.I don’t like how you have to have SCOOPS to buy the things you need and want, but I guess that is like money in real life.
And that is it. Everything else is good on the website!
She said it gets two thumbs up!  She was thrilled to find out that we'll still have the membership beyond the review time, too.  I have heard many times, "Can I please do Always Icecream now?  It's fun!"  Encouraging an enthusiasm for learning is a big plus in my book.

Always Icecream was founded by homeschooling parents with homeschoolers in mind, but any girl could enjoy and benefit from it.  If you'd like to see for yourself, they offer a free trialMemberships are $4.99 per month (only 99 cents for the first month) or $29.99 per year.  A life-time membership is $99.99.  Always Icecream offers a full money-back satisfaction guarantee so there is no risk.
